Teacher Certification program at Grand Valley State University. After earning my Elementary Education teaching certificate I moved to Chicago where I began my teaching career 3 years ago. I then completed my Master’s degree in Education (M.Ed) from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan the summer after moving to Chicago.

I am a READER. I read as much as I can and believe that reading opens many doors. Because I am so passionate about reading I am involved in many programs to help my students with reading. For example, I participate in a book club with the Rochelle Lee Fund monthly and am also looking to start a book club at New Sullivan this year. If you are interested please contact me at school or email me.

When I am not in school I enjoy spending time with my friends & family, traveling, & reading a good book. Some of my favorites are:

«         Book— Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)

«         Food—Seafood and Steak

«         Candy—Now & Later

«         Subject to Teach—Reading

«         Color—Green

As your child’s teacher you can be assured that I will do all that I can to make sure each student does as well as possible.  In a nutshell, my teaching philosophy is “There is a brilliant child locked inside every student,” Marva Collins. I truly believe that every student can do wonders we just have to know and understand our students. Please do not hesitate to contact me. I am hopeful that we (student/parent/teacher) can work together this year to make all the students in my classroom successful!

Ms. Makinen

Hi, I’m Ms. Sarah Makinen. Thank you for visiting my class website. I created this website so that I can communicate with parents and students outside of school and to keep parents up to date on what is happening in our classroom.

My background is in science. I graduated with a B.S. in Health Science in 2000 and began working as a Microbiologist/Food Scientist, but soon realized my love for teaching and enrolled in the Graduate

Meet Ms. Makinen
